Press release: MHRA seeks views on the regulation of medical devices
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) today urged healthcare professionals and the public to give their views on new draft European laws for the regulation of medical devices such as breast and hip implants and hospital equipment, such as dialysis machines. Medical device regulation continues to be a hot topic of debate following PIP breast implants and the recent safety concerns involving metal-on-metal hips. The MHRA has been pressing the European Commission to strengthen the current European system of regulation for four years and we have now launched a ten-week consultation so that healthcare professionals and the public can give their views on whether new draft legislation from the European Commission goes far enough in the following areas... The truth behind “made in Europe” labels on medical devices

Published 24 October 2012
In the second part of the BMJ’s joint investigation with the Daily Telegraph, Deborah Cohen shows how notified bodies are advising non-EU implant manufacturers to bend the rules - for the executive from the Hungarian firm authorised to approve medical devices for the European market, the brochure outlining a proposal for a new metal-on-metal total hip implant should have perhaps raised concern.

Firm tells reporters posing as representatives of hip implant maker how to bend the law. For the female executive from the Hungarian firm which is authorised to approve medical devices throughout Europe, the brochure outlining a proposal for a new “metal-on-metal” hip implant should have rung alarm bells. 'We’re paid by manufacturer so want deal to succeed'

The shiny office block in a business district of Seoul is not the most obvious place to find an organisation offering to authorise a medical product for use in patients throughout Europe. But, earlier this month, in a meeting on the 14th floor of the building in South Korea, two undercover reporters from The Daily Telegraph posing as representatives from a Chinese company were discussing just such a licence. As the air conditioning hummed in the background, the four smartly dressed Korean men began their presentation — in reality, a sales pitch about how they would effectively be able to guarantee that a metal-on-metal hip implant which should be banned could soon find its way legally into British operating theatres.

Patients failed by poor implant regulation, say surgeons

Patients are being “failed” by the poor regulation of artificial hips and other medical devices, which is potentially allowing dangerous products to be used in Britain, the Royal College of Surgeons warns. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, the Royal College and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) warn that this week’s revelations about the system are a “stark reminder” of the “urgent need to address the regulatory flaws”. A joint investigation by this newspaper and the British Medical Journal discloses that the regulation of European medical products is also being “sub-contracted” to questionable Asian firms.

European patients are being treated like “guinea pigs” because of lax rules governing medical devices, a senior American regulator claimed last year.

Faulty medical implants investigation: 'Sometimes we cross the line'

Slovakian firm tells undercover reporters it is happy to approve faulty hip implants in the EU.
The offices of the firm in a former Communist town in Slovakia were lined with burnt-out kettles and toasters, testimony to the “safety” tests which take place in the building. EVPU is one of the private companies given the task of assessing, on behalf of the Slovakian government, whether electrical products are safe to be sold throughout the European Union. But the company’s activities are not restricted to licensing domestic appliances to see if they blow up when plugged in. Under European rules, the firm is also authorised to license medical implants such as artificial hips and knees.

The video Introducing The Mesh Mess Documentary
I uploaded the video to Youtube on the 8th October 2012 you will notice it's now set to private because the 3 students didn't want their filming part - introduction to the 'Mesh Mess documentary' showing in the public domain. I will have to edit the video and this will take me some time to organize. I'm not even sure I have the time to get this done due to a lot of work coming in at all angles! I am not deterred and never will be.

Don't worry though because we have other things going on Worldwide and it WILL get out into the UK public. It's already getting out into the public domain Worldwide in the USA, NZ and Australia and for the UK it's getting out through press releases and of course through this website!

I firmly believe the truth can never be hidden it always surfaces at the right time.

News from the MHRA
Email sent to TVT Mum from the MHRA dated 9th October 2012

Dear Lorraine:
This is just to let you know that there was a very successful meeting the other day between one of the new Commissioners, representatives of the Professional Bodies and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Department of Health and MHRA concerning the above. This took into account the concerns of patients about these devices which were openly discussed.

There was agreement that there needed to be actions by all parties so that we could keep a careful eye on these issues, ensuring best practice for patients.

There is going to be a press briefing within the next week to 10 days and I will let you know exactly when this is going to be. In the meantime it was acknowledged that the reports from you and your friends and colleagues on adverse events had been extremely helpful in bringing this issue to our attention and that MHRA wanted to promote the future onward reporting of all adverse events so that we can keep an eye on the problems and further discuss with the Professional Bodies as indicated.

I hope that you will recognise that you and your organisation have done a tremendous job in bringing about raising of the profile of this important issue and bringing about changes in practice.

With very best wishes.

Pelvis risk for female gym buffs

By Chloe Johnson
Sunday Oct 14, 2012
Women can avoid the need for controversial mesh surgery if they stop going so hard in the gym, says a physiotherapist. Pelvic-floor physiotherapist Michelle Kenway said high-impact gym routines were contributing to women as young as 15 experiencing incontinence and prolapsed pelvic-floor muscles, a health issue that is costing taxpayers more than $8 billion a year. Low squats with heavy weights, jumping, crunches and even running could damage the pelvic floor and create issues, which could lead to surgery. Her claim comes after a Herald on Sunday investigation into surgical mesh used to secure prolapsed pelvic-floor muscles and organs. The synthetic mesh has caused complications for hundreds of people.Kenway called for gyms to examine members before letting them join. But personal trainer Keri Ropati said a screening was not necessary. Instead, trainers should offer low-impact options.

A recent Development at the MHRA
There will be a forthcoming meeting at the MHRA in the very near future with the Department of Health, the Royal Colleges and Professional Bodies and the Commissioners who commission hospital treatments for patients.

I put in a request for an invite to attend the meeting and then I received a response to say the meeting will be very much internal in the first instance, however, the MHRA would like us included by way of submitting a list of concerns we have on Vaginal Tapes and Meshes to be forwarded to the Commissioner.

The MHRA also mentioned they think it's very important that friends and colleagues understand that they have not stood still on this one but are trying to do the absolute best for patients.

One of the recent emails received from Dr Susanne Ludgate at the MHRA:
Subject: Vaginal Tapes and Meshes
Delivery Date: Monday, September 24, 2012
Abstract from the email..
It seems as though I am sure from your end that moving forward is not happening quickly enough. I thought I should write and tell you however that what we have started is now becoming a very much bigger project and one with which I am sure you would approve. We are bringing the Professional Bodies and the Department of Health and Commissioning Board are all anxious now to work together on this issue which they see as a major initiative and we will be having a meeting in the near future with all parties to discuss how to take this forward. I really feel that this is an excellent outcome although it has taken a long time because it means that it has been recognised by all parties that this is a topic that they need to address. Congratulations on your persistence.

With best wishes.

The Current investigations on TVT/Mesh Implants - How it all got started in the United Kingdom!
Document sent to:
The Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Prime Minister - 10 Downing Street, London
Andrew Lansley CBE MP Member of Parliament Secretary of State for Health
By Lorraine Evans

During the year 2011 - I worked on my document for months and months adding every concern I could think of at the time regarding TVT, TVT-Secur,TVTO & TOT Medical Devices and Flat Surgical Mesh used for Prolapse and Hernias. The document was the start of all the current investigations and is in the hands of hundreds of experts within the medical world, regulatory bodies and the legal system around the United Kingdom.

I sent the document on 12th January 2012 and then received shortly after on 25th January 2012 a four page letter from the Department of Health answering all the concerns within my document. TVT Mum is mentioned in the DH letter - 'Websites such as TVT-MUM can also help to increase awareness. The recent increased awareness of this problem is resulting in an increase in the number of reports, helping the MHRA with their assessment'

My document was passed to Dr Susanne Ludgate BSc (Hons) MB ChB DMRT FRCR FRACR Clinical Director, Devices at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and shortly after we were offered a meeting in February 2012 and then it was changed to actual meeting date for the 20th March 2012. One of the concerns raised at the meeting was the medical advice helpline. There is now hope on the horizon for us to have a NHS Mesh Helpline for patients to receive medical expert advice. Please find below an abstract from one of the emails received from Dr Susanne Ludgate:

Email Dated: 21st June 2012 from Dr Susanne Ludgate:
Abstract Start: I have made very firmly with our experts in this area and they have taken this on board such that one of our experts is bringing this up with his Professional Body to ensure for the future there is some mechanism in place where patients can phone in/contact to have their queries answered or indeed be directed to the appropriate person.

I think this is the first time that I have ever known such an initiative to happen so congratulations to you for pushing this forward. End.

Johnson & Johnson Executives Ordered to Testify in Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits
A New Jersey Superior Court judge has ruled that three top Johnson & Johnson executives must testify in the transvaginal mesh lawsuits pending before the court. The Hon. Carol Higbee, who is presiding over more than 1,000 mesh cases in a consolidated litigation, said this month that J & J Chief Executive Officer Alex Gorsky, former J & J Vice Chairman Sheri McCoy, and Ethicon franchise leader Gary Pruden must give depositions that will be videotaped about their roles in the production of the dangerous mesh. Former Johnson & Johnson Chief Executive Officer Bill Weldon also will be deposed if documents are uncovered that link him to knowledge of the defective implants. PIP implant whitewash: Department of Health insists it took 'appropriate' action despite mass panic
By Claire Bates

A government review into the PIP breast implant scandal has warned the UK medicine's regulator that it must take decisive action to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
However, it insisted both the MHRA and Department of Health acted 'appropriately' to the health scare at the time, even though conflicting advice caused mass panic among tens of thousands of affected wome

We posted on our website the details regarding the BAUS 2012 Glasgow Conference under the MHRA work in the pipeline however, there appears to be some misunderstanding from some people in another support group in the UK saying - we have been invited to this meeting! We have never said any such thing, this has not only caused confusion to us but to poor Professor Chapple who has more important things to do than to try and resolve such petty matters!! I hope this clarifies our position and the misunderstanding through no fault of our own. Thank you for understanding.

Comment: There are lots of sessions about putting mesh in but none about how to take it out or deal with the complications.
There is also very little about patient consent, offering conservative non-surgical management or not doing operations of dubious value.
Many of these new operations are either totally unnecessary or are of such limited benefit that extreme caution should be observed. Unfortunately many gynaecologists are effectively trying to ' sell ' these procedures to their patients.

Multimillion-dollar lawsuit over vaginal mesh
Canada: Carol Kouyoumjian speaks of her experience with the surgical mesh in this undated video image.
Date: Tue. Apr. 17 2012 10:00 PM ET
A multimillion-dollar lawsuit has been filed by a group of women who say their lives have never been the same since they had a surgical mesh inserted in them to help treat an embarrassing problem.
Carol Kouyoumjian is one of the women involved in the suit. The former nurse had a stubborn case of incontinence. So six years ago, doctors inserted a transvaginal mesh product around her bladder to try to stop the leaking.
Diane McLaughlin also had the mesh implant in 2006. It solved her bladder problem, but she says it also left her with bouts of severe leg pain.

Abstract: Speaker Lana Keeton from Truth in Medicine USA - When I was fighting for my life following emergency surgery to remove a flesh eating bacteria on Christmas morning 2001, I had no idea I had a piece of polypropylene implanted in me a few days before by my doctor, a piece of petroleum waste by product they won't put in a gas tank, an untested, unsafe medical device cleared by the FDA.

Not only does the medical device industry produce products internationally, it produces harm internationally. Lorraine Evans, who's the U.K. Director of Truth in Medicine and founder of TVT Mum charity in Bristol, United Kingdom, recently received a response from the Department of Health after raising concerns to David Cameron, Prime Minister of England, and Andrew Lansley, the Secretary of State for Health, of the severe ongoing harm from synthetic surgical mesh. At this present time we do our own extensive research on this area as I was told from a Medical Professional and on good authority "the medical profession is actually very alert to surgical complications and sadly, investment in research into the area is not regarded as a priority by medical research funding bodies, which seriously hampers our ability to get a true handle on the situation".
